The Human Factors Department at the University of Ulm, headed by Prof. Martin Baumann, is generally concerned with questions of the design and development of human-technology interaction (HMI) prototypes and the psychological foundations of HMI. A major field of application is the interaction of drivers with intelligent assistance systems and automated driving functions in traffic. We are looking for a research assistant with a background in computer science or related disciplines who is interested in the scientifically based development and testing of HMI concepts, especially for automotive user interfaces and/or in the area of human-robot interaction, and who is highly motivated to conduct research in a scientific and interdisciplinary team with the goal of creating a safe, efficient and sustainable human-machine system.

We are a young, interdisciplinary and international team with close collaborations with computer science and engineering, and offer a world-class experimental infrastructure for research in HMI. Opportunities to work on industry and EU projects are planned during the course of employment. Within the scope of the job, opportunities for doctoral studies will be offered and supported in the best possible way.

Your profile:

  • Completed relevant university studies, diploma or M.Sc., in computer science, HCI or related subjects, with a special focus on HCI
  • Knowledge and experience or interest in the field of human-technology interaction, especially driver-vehicle interaction and/or human-robot interaction
  • Enjoyment of independently learning and testing new technologies
  • Experience in multimedia applications (e.g. DaVinci Resolve, Adobe CC)
  • Basic knowledge and experience in conducting empirical studies
  • Very good English skills
  • Experience in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, R, C#, Python

Your responsibilities:

  • Planning, conducting, evaluating and documenting empirical studies and publishing the results in scientific journals and at conferences
  • Further development of the existing experimental infrastructure (e.g., VR environments; driving simulations with Unity, Unreal or SILAB; implementation of user interfaces prototypes, e.g. in vehicles or in robotics systems)
  • Shared administration of server infrastructure and IT systems; possible to take over as head of the lab later
  • Supervision of final theses and collaboration in teaching in the degree programmes Psychology BSc and MSc and Cognitive Systems MSc
  • Publication of results in scientific journals and at conferences
  • Collaboration on project proposals and support of departmental projects
  • Support with administrative tasks in the department
