for a project investigating interaction strategies for agile and transparent vehicle automation in urban traffic within the EU funded project SHAPE-IT (see ESR6 project description on www.shape-it.eu)

Objectives of the project: Based on existing models and theories in cognitive psychology the PhD candidate will develop and validate a cognitive model of dynamic task sharing between driver and automation in complex urban traffic situations. Based on this model the PhD will develop driver-adaptive interaction strategies for dynamic task sharing considering effects of gender, age, and personality and validate these strategies in simulator studies. This will lead to descriptions of drivers’ information needs in complex urban traffic and a cognitive model of dynamic task sharing between AV and driver in complex urban traffic.

Your profile:

  • You are within 4 years of obtaining a Master (or equivalent academic degree) in Psychology, Human Factors, Cognitive Science or related subjects
  • You have experience and knowledge in traffic or engineering psychology or cognitive modelling
  • You possess knowledge and experience in conducting empirical studies, preferably driving simulator studies
  • You have experience in data analysis with SPSS, R or MatLab
  • You possess very good written and spoken English language skills. Good German language skills or the motivation to learn German are of advantage
  • For this EU project additional eligibility criteria hold. Hence, you can only apply for this position if you have stayed less than 12 months in Germany during the last 3 years (see section Eligibility Criteria on www.shape-it.eu for more information)

Your responsibilities:

  • You are supposed to finish a PhD project at Ulm University on the topic of agile and transparent automation for urban traffic scenarios
  • You will plan, implement, analyse and document the empirical studies of your project and present the results at international conferences and publish them in international journals
  • You will cooperate closely with SHAPE-IT project partners and the local research team
  • You will contribute to the research agenda of the Human Factors Lab at Ulm University
  • You will supervise of MSc and BSc Psychology candidates
  • You will participate and contribute to the organization of the SHAPE-IT educational program and SHAPE-IT events
