at the Botanical Garden of Ulm University as soon as possible. The post holder reports to the Head of the Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden represents a core facility for research, teaching, and public outreach events. It is one of the five largest botanical gardens in Germany, with collections covering a diverse range of living plants in various biotopes, a pharmaceutical garden, greenhouses with tropical plants, and a herbarium with samples from mainly the Neotropics and Europe.

Your profile:

    • Qualifications required:
    • PhD in organismic biology with a focus on botany, ecology or biodiversity
    • Independent research profile with a corresponding publication record in the field of organismic biology, biodiversity research or ecology
    • Excellent knowledge of angiosperm systematics and taxonomy
    • Teaching experience, especially didactics of organismic biology
    • Working knowledge of the multiple tasks and working procedures in botanical gardens
    • Experience in dealing with scientific collections
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (in German and English), and teamwork skills
    • At least three years' experience in teaching and research
    • Fulfillment of the legal and personal requirements for appointment as a civil servant in the career of an Academic Councillor

    Desired skills:

    • Experience in project organisation and supervision
    • Acquisition of third-party funding (e.g., research proposals)
    • Experience in databases as well as management and analysis of collection-based data
    • Analytical and management skills
    • Highly self-motivated with the ability to motivate others
    • Problem-solving skills and a structured, independent working approach

Your responsibilities:

    • Coordination and management of scientific activities in the Botanical Garden: responsible for implementing a collection focus, providing scientific advice to gardeners, visitors and users, contributing to the annual programme, preparing the annual report, and offering guided tours and presentations at internal and external events
    • Development of the collections based on research and teaching demands; supervision, documentation, and integration of all collections in public databases, including data management
    • Research in organismic biology, preferably in the field of botany, biodiversity research, or ecology, including coordination of, and participation in, interdisciplinary projects to promote the Botanical Garden as a scientific core facility at Ulm University
    • Teaching academic courses in the field of organismic biology, e.g., plant identification, plant morphology, ecology, biodiversity of plants and animals, and excursions
