For the Institute of Surface Chemistry and Catalysis we are looking for an

Academic employee (m/f/d) (PhD candidate)

We seek to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and particularly encourage qualified female scientists to apply for this position.

Severely disabled applicants with equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration.

The research group investigates the physical-chemical properties of small mass-selected clusters with a unique combination of reaction kinetic and infrared-spectroscopic experiments in conjunction with theoretical simulations. In the current project we aim to apply these techniques to answer fundamental astrochemical questions. In particular, we aim to gain insight into the formation, growth and chemical properties of small interstellar dust particles. Additionally we want to obtain infrared spectra which can serve as data base for the potential future identification of such particles via the James-Webb-Space-Telescope.

Your profile:

    • University degree (master) in chemistry, physics or related studies
    • Interest in experimental research in physical chemistry
    • High motivation to work independently in an interdisciplinary research field
    • Very good English language skills (oral and written)
    • Willingness to participate in research stays in the Netherlands (1-2 stays every year for 2-3 weeks)
    • Very good knowledge of physical chemistry (kinetics, spectroscopy, quantum mechanics)
    • Experience with mass spectrometry and/or vacuum technology is desirable

Your responsibilities:

    • Planning and performance of reaction kinetic experiments in an ion trap and infrared spectroscopy
    • Responsibility for measurement equipment (maintenance incl. small improvements)
    • Data evaluation with appropriate software
    • Presentation of the scientific results at conferences and in journals
    • Involvement in the teaching of the institute

We offer:

    • Highly innovative research in the field of astrochemistry in an interdisciplinary research group
    • Participation in research stays in the Netherlands
    • Participation in international collaborations
    • Possibility to participate in scientific conferences
    • The possibility to pursue a doctoral degree will be given
