Ulm University and the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies (DLR‐QT) have joined forces to establish research groups in the field of quantum technologies for spaceflight applications, with an emphasis on developing instrumentation for future missions involving scientific topics like navigation and Earth observation. The successful applicant will be named Head of the Department of Integration of Micro and Nanosystems at DLR-QT.
Research focus for the new professorship will be the integration of micro and nanosystems in space science technologies, taking advantage of the fabrication and characterization capabilities provided by Ulm University’s cleanroom facilities.
We look to hire an outstanding researcher with demonstrated expertise in (i) systems integration at micro and nanometer length scales; (ii) modular integration concepts; (iii) applications of micro and nanosystems in experimental, quantum-based satellite systems; and (iv) MEMS-based functional integration of quantum-optical components using specialized packaging methods suitable for vacuum conditions. Here, the objective is not only to meet environmental constraints imposed by vacuum but also to reduce system size and weight. As such, the professorship will draw on various aspects of microsystems engineering to develop construction and packaging concepts for applications of quantum metrology and quantum optics in space science and technology.
Over the course of several years, the successful applicant will have gained experience working with partners from industry as well as in the acquisition of third-party research funding, ideally with industry participation. Research activities conducted by the candidate will have garnered international recognition, and they will manifest clear potential to enrich and profit from collaboration with University facilities, DLR institutes and the Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology (IQST).
Qualifications for the new professorship include didactic competence; teaching experience in an academic setting; significant experience in the acquisition and management of research projects related to spaceflight; and the readiness and capacity to establish and operate corresponding laboratories. The new hire will offer courses in quantum technology—focusing on the integration of micro and nanosystems—at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s level, subject to a reduced teaching obligation (2 hours per week). These courses are likely to attract not only engineering students but also those majoring in physics and in a possible future program in the area of quantum technologies. Opportunities to engage in the academic self-governance of Ulm University will be accorded to the extent permitted by the respective state laws for higher education.
